Understanding the Cost of Discipleship
July 25, 2024The Sovereignty of God is the ultimate source of all power and authority on Earth and in Heaven. It implies that God is in control over all the creation to exercise His power as He chooses. Consider the sovereignty of nations all over the world. Each one has the power to rule themselves in the manner its citizens choose. It is prohibited for external influence to interfere with the sovereignty of these nations. This gives each country the power to exercise its power to defend its sovereignty. The sovereignty of God is like that of nations except that He is much greater and powerful than all the nations in the world put together.
God is the sovereign ruler of the Heavens and the Earth. He created everything we see today and all creation is answerable to Him. He asserts His sovereignty in our lives and points out that we should not forget about His authority.
He forms the light and creates the darkness. He brings prosperity and creates disaster. He made the Earth and created mankind on it.
This is the power of the Lord over the Earth and everything in it. We are products of His great love for us and He molds us to become whatever He wishes. Our lives belong to the Lord to do as is His will. We are part of His sovereignty. The more we embrace and understand it, the greater our potential to thrive in His presence. There are many ways to live your life obeying the Lord’s sovereignty.

-
Do not quarrel with the Lord.
We are God’s property as well as everything we own. It falls upon us to align ourselves with His will. The Bible warns against quarreling with our maker. Our relationship with God is like that of a potter and clay. Just as the potter decides what to make of the clay, so does God decide what to do with us. He has absolute power over our lives.
Understanding the sovereignty of the Lord is crucial to having a long-term relationship with Him. You cannot put up boundaries between you and Him unlike when you quarrel with your mates. He has autonomy over your life like a parent does over his children.
-
Embrace the Lord.
The Lord wants you to turn to Him and be saved. Do not run away from Him even when you sin against Him. You remain to be God’s creation whether you are sinful or righteous. However, what does the Lord want for you? He wants you to be Holy as He is; following His laws to the latter and becoming His good ambassador.
Embrace God under all circumstances and do not pull yourself away from Him, as Adam and Eve did in Eden. He wants you to be proud of Him as your Heavenly Father and bond with Him. Embracing the Lord involves devoting yourself to doing His work because you genuinely love to do it, not because it is a duty. Those who embrace the Lord have a special place in His Heart. Look at the beautiful relationship that God has with those who embrace Him. You can also be like them.
-
Take care of the creation of the Lord.
After the creation of Man, God placed Him in the Garden of Eden for two reasons – to work and take care of it. He had many things that he could assign Adam to do yet God chose these two. It is because they rank higher in his sovereignty. We also have a duty like Adam to take care of the creation of the Lord.
You can start exercising this mandate in your home. Take care of your house and the environment around you. God will be pleased with this initiative because it not only shows your commitment to preserving His creation but also your respect for His work. There is no better way to show respect to someone other than taking care of what he treasures. Taking care of the creation of the Lord rewards you with the freedom to enjoy its benefits. Adam was given the freedom to eat from any tree in the garden except one. He earned this freedom by obeying the sovereignty of God through taking care of the garden.
-
Trust in the Lord
There is no reason why you should not trust in your creator. He is the controller of the Universe and sustainer of life. This is the level of the power of the Lord. There is no reason to doubt that He can provide, protect, and take care of you. He has proven Himself even before you were born that He is capable of doing anything because nothing stands in His way. His office is not political and neither is His love biased. You do not need a second plan when you choose to trust in the Lord.

Consider how children trust their parents. They are heroes before their eyes and believe they will not disappoint them. This is the level and beyond that God wants us to trust Him. We should not rely on our understanding but instead, submit everything to Him. God promises to straighten our paths when we put our trust in Him unconditionally. It is also a way of obeying His sovereignty.
-
Submit to the timing of the Lord.
The Lord has made everything beautiful in its time. He is sovereign over everything and has no trouble arranging the sequences of events in your life. He brings joy and sadness, love and hate, and war and peace at the right time in our lives. We should not question His judgment about what He brings into our lives because He wants it to be so.
The timing of the Lord is perfect and submitting to it is obeying the Lord’s sovereignty. When you do, He commands blessings to come your way at the right time. Abraham was blessed with Isaac when he was one hundred years old. It was not too late for the Lord to give him that blessing because Abraham had submitted to His sovereignty.
Understanding the sovereignty of the Lord is a bonus in the life of a Christian. It is the path that the Lord wants us to take.
