The Benefits of a Heavenly Audit of your Spiritual Life

Earning your Ticket to Heaven
July 25, 2024A relationship is a deliberate commitment towards someone or something. A relationship with Heaven is your spiritual commitment to relate well with the owner of Heaven (who also happens to own the Earth) and look forward to entering it one day. A good relationship with the Heavens will lead to a good relationship with the owner of the Heavens and the Earth. Your stay in both of these places shall be enjoyable when you are in a good relationship with the owner. Consider your relationship with the landlord of your office space or home. He has the power to give you a notice to vacate his premises or to let you continue living there. God is like your landlord except that he is more powerful than him.
You should invest a lot in your relationship with Heaven because you are guaranteed higher returns. This is not an ordinary relationship that weighs you down with daily ups and downs. It will not break your heart or cause any tension in your life. Simon Peter, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus, wanted to know the compensation for having a relationship with the Heavens (when they chose to follow Jesus). Jesus was clear about it. A good relationship with Heaven, when you choose to follow Jesus, will give you the following:
- The honor of sitting on the twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
- A hundredfold of the family and properties you have left to follow Jesus.
- Eternal life.

You are also a candidate for receiving these gifts when you have a healthy relationship with the Heavens. This is something that you work on continuously your entire lifetime. All the disciples of Jesus (except Judas), built and maintained healthy relationships with the Heavens even after the ascension of Jesus. They formed the early church that received new converts, some of whom became great ministers of the gospel. They left a mark as great service people of the gospel.
Jesus taught us how we can build a new relationship with Heaven or maintain and improve on the existing one. Some of the ways include:
1. To be born of water and the spirit.
To maintain a relationship, you have to understand where the other person comes from. Heaven is a Holy place where Satan does not live. On the other hand, the world is where Satan was thrown when he rebelled against God in Heaven. There is a mismatch when the Earthly wants a relationship with the Heavenly.
Seeing this, Jesus highlighted the path for us to build a relationship with Heaven by removing the mismatch concern. You have to be born of water and the Spirit to have any relationship with the Heavens. Life in Heaven is spiritual and on Earth it is carnal. The Holy Spirit bridges this gap.
2. To repent of our sins and forgive those who wrong us.
The Holy Spirit, being the connector of your relationship with the Heavens, can only come upon you if you repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus. Repentance is continuous even if you already have an established relationship with the Heavens. Consider how you routinely take your car for maintenance. It does not need to be faulty for you to service it. You are taking care of it as its owner. Repenting and forgiving those who wrong you maintains your relationship with the Heavens. It washes off the ‘dirt’ on your spirit from living in a sinful environment yet you want to continue relating with the Holy Heavens.
For this reason, Jesus included repentance in the Lord’s Prayer that He taught His disciples. It is a daily reminder of how we have to maintain our relationship with the Heavens – “…forgive my debts as we also have forgiven our debtors…”

We should expect unconditional forgiveness when we equally forgive our debtors. This is the price of maintaining relationships, especially the one we have with the Heavens.
3. To be intentional in seeking God.
Relationships are intentional. They are not supposed to be one-sided. Both parties should actively participate in making it work. An unattended relationship eventually dies a natural death. Consider relationships like a bonfire. When you do not continue adding firewood to it, it will die down. The Bible teaches how you can set your intentions to seek God. Those who seek Him diligently will find Him. Getting closer to God brings Him closer to you. Your understanding of Him will grow and a new light will shine upon your life.
The early church understood the secret of maintaining a healthy relationship with the Heavens. They had fellowship and shared meals daily together. This made them bond better because they were intentional in making their faith relationship work.
Fellowship is one way of expressing your commitment to be intentional in seeking God. The more you partake, the more your relationship with the Heavens grows.
4. Build your relationship on a rock.
Building a relationship is like building a house. The stronger the foundation the more durable the house. Jesus likened a person who hears the word and obeys it to a wise man who built his house on a rock. It endured bad weather because it had a strong foundation on a rock. He also likened a person who hears the word and does not obey it to a foolish person who built his house on the sand. The house crumbled and fell during bad weather.
A wise Christian builds his relationship with the Heavens on a rock. It means that you are not in the relationship solely for its benefits. Heaven is pleased by such a commitment in a relationship. Even when storms of tribulation come, your relationship with God will remain firm.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego built their relationship with the Heavens on a rock. They stood up to King Nebuchadnezzar and refused to worship his idol. They did not care whether God would save them from the furnace or not. They only cared not to damage the relationship they had with Him. God is looking upon us to maintain our relationship with Him in this manner.
Building and maintaining your relationship with the Heavens is a wise decision to make. Your entire future lies ahead of you when you do it right. Heaven is watching.
