Making a Covenant with God
July 25, 2024A priest is a representative of God in your life. Most especially in the Old Testament, priests were the main connection between God and man. It has continued to be so to date. Much has changed since the curtain in the temple was torn into two after the death of Jesus on the cross. However, the importance of priests has never changed. God has appointed them to herd His flock and guide them through the path of Holiness.
We are God’s flock and under the care of the shepherds He chose for us. We have a lot to learn from them because they are dedicated vessels for God’s use.
The calling to Priesthood.

The world has both imposters and real Priests. Some appoint themselves and others have genuinely received God’s calling to be His servants. The Bible teaches that Priests are appointed by God to represent people before Him and to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. Unlike world appointments, the calling to the priesthood is sacred. God pulls you from among your people to come closer to Him and serve His people in the way He directs you to. The expectations people have of priests are equally above board. They expect to see a perfect person since they have a more intimate relationship with God. But how true is this?
God acknowledges the weaknesses of priests and how they are prone to human weaknesses. It is exactly the reason why God called them into His service. He wants them to deal gently with those who are going astray because they relate more closely. While doing it, they should also atone for their sins like everyone else.
God has put a secret in the calling of Priests which He reveals to us subtly. It is a call for wisdom. The Lord does not call perfect people into His service. God chooses those who can effectively represent Him to the people without taking His glory.
The priest of God in your local church has been appointed by God to be there just as you have also been placed under his spiritual care. God has important lessons that He wants to teach you to prepare you for the whole lifetime ahead.
Priestly lessons.

A Priest has been tried, tested, and proven by God to be a faithful servant. He bears the weight of the body of Christ and he then takes all of it to the Lord. These are some of the lessons you can learn from them:
1. Obedience and faithfulness.
Obedience to God is following His instructions and commandments while faithfulness is keeping your word to Him. God requires both of them from all of us. A priest follows God’s commandments to the latter without casting any doubt. Faithfulness to God accompanies obedience. Priests keep their word to inspire confidence in the people they lead. The people then have confidence in both the Priest and God.
Your obedience and faithfulness to God improves your relationship with Him as it does between God and the priests. Consider how Prophet Elijah was faithful to God even after Queen Jezebel had killed other prophets. God loved Him for his faithfulness and he was one of the greatest prophets in Israel.
2. Courage.
Courage is the ability to do the right thing even when there are scarier consequences. The priests of God are courageous because they know they have Heavenly support. They fearlessly deliver God’s message anywhere He commands them. When the Prophet Nathan was sent to warn King David about taking Uriah’s wife, he courageously faced him. God expects priests to be as courageous as Prophet Nathan.
Neither are we spared from being as courageous as priests. God wants you to courageously speak up for the oppressed and helpless in society. It is the reason that He has put you in a position to see what is happening to them. God has placed the example of courage in the priest in your life. It is how He will also use you to defend the helpless. God receives all the honor when they are saved from their hardships.
3. Sacrifice.

To sacrifice is to give up one thing for the sake of a greater cause. It is what Priests do daily. They sacrifice their family time, personal comfort, and ambitions to serve God. They do this because the Lord ranks first in their lives. This is the position that God should take in our lives as well.
A Christian life is full of sacrifices. The world casts us out because we are unlike them. We risk friendships and social comfort because we choose to follow Christ. The Bible warns against friendship with the world. Do not lean too much on the side of the world. Priests remind us that we are not of the world though we live in it. God shall reward you for the sacrifices you make for Him.
4. Wisdom.
Wisdom is the ability to discern right and wrong. Priests need to have good judgment. Any bias on their part will turn people away from God. They need to know how to handle the needs of different demographics in the church – children, youth, women, and men. Only divine wisdom can lead a priest to attend to them adequately.
Since God understands that we also need wisdom, He asks that anyone who lacks it should pray about it. He gives wisdom to anyone without any fault finding. You need to balance your interaction with different people because they may lead you away from God. Wisdom solves the crisis of how you can love a sinner and not partake in his sin. It is possible to show sinners love and lead them into salvation without guilt-tripping them. This is the magic of wisdom.
There are a lot of things to learn from the Priests of the Lord. They are our role models as God is theirs. God is the light to all of us and we can be how He wants us to become.
