Exploring your Christian Life in Eden
July 25, 2024A covenant is a permanent agreement between two parties. It is a stronger version of a promise without room for defaulting. It is also specific about fulfilling a common agreement between the two parties. A covenant with God improves your relationship with Him. It is beyond the normal relationship God has with everybody else. A covenant makes you His favorite child because you have committed more in your relationship with Him. Both parties of a covenant are obligated to stick together for its success. It is in the interest of both of them that the objective of the covenant is fully met.
A covenant with God is eternal. Other people have done it before and we can see what happened to them. At the same time, other people avoid entering into a covenant with God for fear of defaulting on their part. It is a Christian duty to do a risk-benefit analysis before deciding on when, not if, they will have a covenant with God.
A covenant is a path worthy to travel, any day any time. It is a personal decision because its reward for honoring it or punishment for dishonoring it is borne by whoever entered it in the first place. In addition, you owe it to your Christian community to have a flourishing relationship with God that He will be proud of you.
God does not shy away from boasting about those who win His heart.  He once asked Lucifer if He had seen Job, a blameless and upright man. He refers to Job as “my servant.” Somewhere else, God calls King David “a man after my heart.” He is the same man whom He sent Prophet Nathan to reprimand because of adultery. In another part, God refers to Abraham as His friend. He is the man who was ready to sacrifice his only son until God stopped him. These testimonies from God indicate the intimate relationship He had with them. It was a covenant that yielded an exemplary relationship. This is the path to follow to also be like them.
Reasons to make a covenant with God.

Relating well with our Heavenly Father is as important as the other relationships we have. We should dedicate ourselves to Him the same way we make other relationships work. We go out of our way for the sake of our spouses, family, and friends because they are valuable to us. We preserve our relationship with God because He ranks higher in our relationship chain. Among other reasons, this is why we should have a covenant with God:
1. To access God’s promises.

We make promises to those we relate with. We are sincere with them and look forward to fulfilling our promises. They spice up the relationship and build the trust you share. Nobody is forced to make a promise. It automatically comes up because of your attachment to that person.
This is true when we enter into a covenant with God. He promised certain things to those who have a covenant with Him, as He did with Abraham. God only fulfills His promises to those who have reached the covenant level of friendship. The Lord promises to bless you and make your name great. Entering into a covenant with God unlocks these promises.
2. To repair our relationship with God.
Sometimes we get hurt in relationships. It happens even if we do not want it to. We go out of our way to make amendments because the relationship is valuable to us. Our relationship with God is not any different. It hurts God when we sin and it is even more hurtful when our relationship ends because of it. For this reason, we make a covenant with God to repair our relationship with Him.
A covenant is binding to all parties and it reflects on our seriousness to have a better relationship with our creator. God initiated the covenant of salvation to repair our relationship and rescue us from sin. Salvation is when we accept Jesus Christ to be our Lord and Savior. He will wash away our sins and make us Holy once more. As long as we keep our spirits pure through the covenant of Salvation and do not sin, our relationship with God flourishes.
3. To redeem us from trouble.

Even when we do not look for trouble, sometimes trouble finds us. Again, sometimes the trouble we get into becomes so much that we cannot handle it alone. We need someone stronger, powerful, and wiser to rescue us when we are in the pits. The Lord is the kind of rescuer we need. The best way to ask for His rescue is to have a covenant with Him for protection. He will never forsake us, even in our darkest days.
The Lord came to the rescue of the Israelites in slavery in Egypt because of the covenant He made with Abraham that included protecting his descendants. He heard their cry for rescue in Egypt and sent Moses to redeem them from it. The genesis of this divine rescue is the covenant that God had with Abraham. Entering into one with Him is the insurance plan for rescue by the Lord that you need. Leviticus 25:38-43
4. To attract the commitment of God.
Commitment is earned. We earn it from our friends and colleagues. We have to prove ourselves worthy of it for us to be visible in their eyes. Similarly, we must earn the commitment of God. There are things that He provides for everyone and others that are specifically for those in His inner circle. A deeper relationship with God makes you worthy of His commitment. The only path to develop it is to enter into a covenant with Him.
A covenant with God makes both of you indebted to each other. You owe each other a lifetime of commitment to fulfill the obligations of the covenant. God has been committed to those He had a covenant with – Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, the nation of Israel, King David, and Job just to mention a few. You can also be like these great men when you enter into the covenant of salvation. It will earn you God’s eternal commitment.
Making a covenant with God is a wonderful experience. It is a beautiful landmark in your life that you should not miss. The Lord is ready to enter into one with you.
