Embracing the Gospel of Jesus Christ
July 25, 2024Prayer is communication with God. You speak to Him as much as He does to you. Most especially, it is a mystery given how it solves some of the most complex problems at hand. Sometimes you do not have to do much but to pray and God does the rest. It is important to weigh and balance between how often you pray against how you are required to. It helps to fully understand the mystery of prayer.
Prayer inspires hope, installs courage, increases our knowledge about God, and prepares us for what is ahead. It is reassuring to pray to the Father above who always listens to us without any bias. His love for us is not tied to anything and despite our ignorance about prayer, He patiently leads us into understanding the power it holds.
What is the right prayer time?

Each time the Spirit of God leads us to pray is a perfect time. The thirst for prayer is quenched when you speak to the Lord as He listens and vice versa – Him talking and you listening. God is everywhere at the same time attending to everyone who seeks Him. You do not need an appointment to speak to Him about anything. However, there are church and family traditions about prayer time. This path makes our faith in God stronger contrary to if we would not follow these traditions. It instills the discipline of prayer in your spirit by creating timelines for this communication.
Christian culture teaches the following prayer times:
1. Before meals.
We pray before meals to thank God for what is on our table. What you eat is not from your strength but God enabled you to have it. He brought clients to your business and you made high sales. You passed that job interview because the Lord made it possible for it to happen that way. The money you earn is because God has provided it for you in the first place. By extension, so is the food on your table – God has provided it.
Jesus also prayed before meals. When feeding the five thousand people, he took the five loaves and two fish, looked up to heaven, and gave thanks. Again, during the last supper with His disciples, he took the bread, gave thanks, and gave to His disciples. He did the same with the cup as part of the last supper. It is how we should also give thanks before every meal. Not only is it Christian-like but also a reminder of God’s provision.
2. Before going to bed.

It is customary to pray before retiring to bed. This is our last act of the day before we sleep and look forward to the following day. God has gifted us a full day of activities and a peaceful evening that we should be thankful for. A million things could happen to you during the day yet the Lord preserved you to lie in your bed each night. It is a miracle that prayer about it shows your gratitude.
The Psalmist urges that we search our hearts and be silent while in bed. This meditation also counts as a prayer when your spirit is thankful to God for the day.
3. For thanksgiving.
Thankfulness is a reason to pray to God. It is not every time that you pray when you need something from God. You can also pray to show gratitude. Many things happen in our lives daily that we have no control over. However, God aligns them with His purpose for us and preserves us from all evil. Besides what He has done for us, we pray to thank God for being the God of our lives. It is a way of acknowledging His place in our lives.
The Psalmist teaches us to enter His gates with thanksgiving and praise His name. Appreciation unlocks another level of our relationship with God. If we are grateful to fellow mortals for the small favors they do for us, how much more should we be to the Lord?
4. During distress.
Distressful moments can make you complain a lot about your discomfort. Sometimes you could even doubt the presence of God in your life. He assures us that He never leaves our side through thick and thin. God is always there for you. Praying during distress attracts God to come into your life and bring you into His embrace. It is a time to pray and not to complain.
The Psalmist once more says how God saves him when he calls to Him. He prays in the morning, noon, and evening, and the Lord hears his voice in distress. Similarly, God also hears your prayer in distress and He will save you from any trouble you are in. The time you are in distress is a perfect time to pray to God about it.
5. When lonely.
Loneliness is not Godly. People feel lonely when things do not work out as planned. They feel that God is not on their side anymore even when it is not true. Praying at such a time feels futile and there is no point in doing it but God wants us to do the opposite.
Jesus Christ was also lonely as you may be feeling right now. He found a solution in prayer. He went to the mountain to pray even just immediately before His arrest. As He prayed, an Angel of the Lord appeared and strengthened Him. Prayer cured Jesus’ loneliness and it can cure yours too. Pray to God about your loneliness and He will strengthen your spirit.
The prayer connection between God and man.

Consider how the mother-child connection during pregnancy happens through the umbilical cord. Similarly, prayer is your spiritual umbilical cord that connects your spirit to God.
The umbilical cord takes oxygenated blood and nutrients to the fetus. It also takes away the deoxygenated blood from the fetus to the placenta. The health of the fetus depends on the functionality of the umbilical cord.
Prayer supplies your spirit with encouragement and builds your faith in God. The mystery of prayer is how it connects even sinners with the Almighty God. It is what you need in each day of your salvation.
