How to Put your Spiritual Papers in Order
July 25, 2024Maturity is the state of being fully developed. A mature person has gone through most (if not all) life stages. They have their fair share of experience from which they can advise somebody else. Their advice is solid because it is tried, tested, and proven by real-life experience. Everyone dreams that they will one day be mature and overcome low-level challenges. At their maturity, they will have the experience and mental energy to handle their new challenges as they come. This is the beauty of maturity. It happens across every part of our lives, even in our spirit.
Spiritual maturity is the measure of your connection with God. It is similar to the maturity of a child and how they relate to their parents. Can the child handle himself or does the parent need to constantly check on him? Again, can the child evaluate matters and make good decisions no matter how small? These are the developmental milestones of a child that cannot be overlooked. It reflects on the maturity level of the child. Back to your spiritual connection with God, it is the measure of your maturity in Christ. Your trust, reliance, and understanding of Him is the path to spiritual maturity.
This is the way…

The apostle Paul once looked back at his journey through salvation. His reflection is the same as ours today, we walk in the same steps he did. He says, “When I was a child, I spoke like a child, thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I gave up childish ways.”
Spiritual infancy is the stage that Paul described he was in. It is when you are lacking in spiritual knowledge and your perception about it is very shallow. It is just like a child who thinks people drop from the sky (and not born) or that food goes to the feet (and not the stomach) when you eat while standing up. They later realize that people are born and grow up to become big. Also, food always goes to the stomach no matter how you eat it (whether sitting or standing).
There are beliefs you had about God before receiving salvation. Continuing to hold onto them is spiritual infancy. God wants you to deepen your understanding of Him without depending on childish myths. These are fundamental Christian principles:
1. God is everywhere, not in Heaven alone.
That God is in Heaven, and nowhere else, is a myth most people believe. He says in His word that He is everywhere; no place is too secretive that you can hide away from Him. He is everywhere at the same time and unlike us, He is not limited by time.
God does not mind when we pray to Him anytime or anywhere. He is never too busy for us. You can trust in His reliability. The more we trust in Him with everything we have, even our lives, the more we mature spiritually.
2. God is not limited by anything.

Distance, time, family background, or government policies cannot limit God. He is supreme over all creation. God is not like the role model you admire, your parents, or older siblings. Sometimes children watch as they are unable to fulfill what they want. It leads them to think that God is also limited by the same factors as them. These are childish thoughts.
Spiritual maturity is embracing God’s unlimited ability without likening Him to your favorite superpower. Unlike them, He can do more abundantly than what we ask or think. Spiritual maturity is praying to Him while believing this. It puts you a step away from childhood.
3. God loves everyone. He does not hate sinners.
God loves sinners but hates sin. He embraces all of us despite our weak and sinful nature. It is Biblical that we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Do not hide yourself from Him as Adam and Eve did after eating the forbidden fruit. Instead, be remorseful for your sins and repent before Him. He will forgive you and start a new relationship with you.
Spiritual maturity is not covering your sins but being ready to confess, repent, and forsake them. You will obtain the mercy of God. Do not be a repeat offender and God will embrace you each time you repent. Children play the blame game but mature people own their mistakes and learn from them. It is also spiritual maturity in Christ.
4. Hardships do not mean that God has abandoned you.
Challenges do not mean that God has forsaken you. Neither does it mean that you face challenges because you are a sinner. God encourages us that a righteous man may fall seven times but he wakes up each time. Problems come your way because you are also human like everyone else. It is not because God has abandoned you.
Spiritual maturity is not blaming God when something bad happens to you. Job was in such a situation at one time. Despite the influence of his wife urging him to curse God so that he could die, he did not blame Him for anything that happened to him. He held onto his faith and God restored his fortunes twice. Maturity is trusting God on both sunny and rainy days.
5. God gives us the freedom of choice.

God does not force us into making decisions. You have the freedom of whether or not to choose salvation. He wants us to initiate important choices and He will be there to guide us through them. Children cannot initiate things by themselves. They would rather wait for an adult to lead them into their choices.
Mature people accept the responsibility of taking charge of their lives, including deciding about their spiritual lives. You are on the right path to spiritual maturity in Christ when you make correct decisions in the Lord.
Most importantly, spiritually mature people are capable of distinguishing good from bad. It is the right path to spiritual maturity in Christ.
